I was reading a reference which mentioned trivalent lanthanide ion fluorosensors have the advantage of being suitable for TRL and TRD comparing to organic luminophore fluorosensors.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with them. Can anyone please explain a bit about these two techniques? What are the applications of these methods, when did one use them and how can we set a system for these analyses?

These two techniques are the same, simply different names. You will also find sometimes "time-gated" detection of luminescence.
It works well with emissive species having long excited state lifetimes.
a) a short excitation pulse is shined on the sample
b) the detector is switched off and remains off during a period f time called "gate time" or "delay time"
c) When the unwanted (fast) luminescence (e.g. fluorescence from organic part or from biological media) has faded off, the detector is switched on and therefore only measures the wanted signal

Dr. Bunzli is spot on. The pioneers in using time gating of lanthanide (mostly Tb and Eu) luminescence to suppress background (nsec) emission in immunoassays were Hemmila and Soini. It can be done either in the time or frequency domains.
