In Bolivia (my country) gypsum wastes are used to manufacture pre-fabricated walls of plaster for the construction of low-budget houses.
We have a lot of gypsum waste from the process of removing sulfuric acid smoke from coal power plants in Denmark. Much of it is used for pre-fabricated walls plates. They are very popular and gives good fire prevention.
Gypsum is used as a component in cement mixtures as an agent to control the setting rate of the cement.
In Brazil we use it as a soil profile conditioner. Due to its formula (CaSO4), specifically due to its anion, gypsum is not able to increase soil pH. However, SO4-- can form neutral ionic pairs with Ca, Mg and K, carrying them down the soil profile. It improves soil fertility in deeper soil layers and also decreases Al+++ toxicity. It helps increasing the soil zone explored by roots, which increases plants productivity and tolerance to droughts. It is also a source of Ca when soils have low Ca content but high pH.
We can use it in JORDAN as a treatment for sodic soil reclamation
It can be used for manufacture of pre-fabricated walls of plaster for construction of low-budget houses.
Dry gypsum wastes can be milled and used as powder for farm animals bedding. It is also possible to use coarser granules having enhanced porosity and moisture absorption capacity, which can be produced by agglomeration of powdered gypsum jointly with some convenient organic binder, such as recycled paper fibber. Both gypsum milled powder and granules are available in the market. Moisture is greatly eliminated due to capillarity-driven absorption. Ammonia from livestock urine reacts with gypsum being retained as ammonium sulphate. This reduces ammonia volatilization and odour, thus increasing the nitrogen content in the solid waste composed by manure and the spent bedding material. Its calcium and sulphur content increases as well, from the gypsum contribution. After composting, the recovered waste can be applied as cropland fertilizer.
