Freeze drying may help in retaining volatile oil for longer. But it is always good to process freshly harvested herbs for excellence in recovery.
Agree with Dr Suresh,Volatile oil may retain longer time and losses will be minimum beside that so many vital compounds which are heat sensitive will not deteriorate.
But freeezing can break the cells of tissue which produce and storage the essential oil of this grass and part of oil can be lost when the plant returns to room temperature, decreasing the yield.
ok and can anybody tell me which extraction process industrialists use most for essential oil extraction? common laboratory methods are distillations(steam/hydro)
Steam distillation method is mostly used for essential oil extraction.
Hydrodistillation is used in lab. as well industerial scales. It depends on the size and capacity of the extraction unit.
it all depends on the type of chemical constituents your are interested, either stable or volatile, and also active or inactive.
