As a lecturer in the College of Engineering of my university, I am required to teach a range of 2- 4 courses per semester to encourage learning and personal improvements of the students. Since my university is specialized in petroleum and serves as an outlet to prepare students to solve problems in the oil and gas sector, I introduced petroleum industry visits for students. This I believe will enable students to become versatile with operations in the petroleum industry.

For practical- oriented courses, I usually create multiple student teams/ groups for design projects to ensure team- building, problem- solving and improved interpersonal relationships. In the student teams/ groups, the students are given well- defined tasks and required to present the outcomes of the tasks to the class at a given deadline.
I am a construction supervisor, I hope to join academia in future with the hope of creating activities in and out of classroom. Encouraging industrial visits for students will be fine.
It is important to expose students to industrial visits, they go out there, discuss with strategic and operational staff, get, primary/secondary data, analyze the data and discuss their findings in class for other undergrad. or postgrad. students to benefit.

Also, I provide student engagement in the university workshop for mini- projects to improve students’ practical design skills and office hours to ensure students are given clarifications on courses when necessary.

Dr. Modestus, introducing petroleum industry visits for your students is a laudable practice. Also, getting your students to learn to operate facilities or complex machines and systems and also training them to become versatile with operations in the petroleum industry will be of great benefit to students in higher institutions.
