I want to remove arsenic from water using AC filter media, but I believe that this filter produces sludge in the effluent, and because AC filter has several drawbacks like pH and contact time dependent. That is why I thought that combining it with sand filter would enhance the arsenic removal from water? Do you think this initial hypothesis is wrong?
Activated carbon units doesn't produce sludge in the effluent. In case you are observing suspended solids or settable particles in the product water then water filtration is highly recommended prior to adsorption (removal of arsenic).
What is the complete configuration of your setup and what is the volume of water you are trying to treat oer day?

So you are saying that if I want to observe the arsenic removal from contaminated water, it is recommended to put activated carbon adsorption in the upstream and then adsorption by sand filter?
My setup would be for one family with at least 4-5 members.
You should put chlorination first followed by a sand filter, and activated carbon at the end.
I think no sludge results from this filter as there is no sedimentation in this process besides that you are removing arsenic as an ion. did you measure turbidity? also did you measure pH?. Is it a groundwater?
