I am seeking articles of water quality problems of large rivers, such as the Mississippi River. And I am interested in articles with treatments and solutions.

Treatments and solutions seems that need to be implemented upstream of the large rivers. It is necessary to eliminate or mitigate the sources of pollution, that is, non-treated discharges, urban and industrial, and nutrients and fertilisers resulting from intensive agriculture that are transported with the surface runoff. To my perception of this issue, if this is not done upstream, hardly will be possible a reliable or economically sustainable solution downstream.
Victor, in my opinion, if you are searching solutions to de-pollute large polluted rivers( having huge flow), it would be based on engineering interventions only by treating inward waste-waters aiming at recycling the treated water or letting it into the rivers. Utmost you may provide other solutions for stopping further addition of polluted wastewater into rivers. Here, control measures would be best approach then cure, in fist hand.
