VBM - when and how doing skull stripping?

Hello everybody,

I am approaching the VBM analysis for my research project and I am using SPM. I have a question regarding the first preprocessing steps, specifically skull-stripping. Is it better to perform it before segmentation (in that case, what software do you use?) or together with segmentation as SPM does?

Hi Francesco,

I would clearly prefer CAT12 (https://neuro-jena.github.io/cat/) as THE segmentation tool, if you plan to do VBM analyses. This is currently state-of-the-art in regards to voxel-based methods. The pipeline is validated and very widely used. No need to think about steps and their order…
