There are number of definitions of the term value chain in the literature. various development institutions/ INGOs are applying the rhetoric approach in different ways. it seems there are significant gap in theory and practice.
what are critical dimensions and aspects that should be taken into account in value chain analysis?
is VC an improved version of SC as VCs are considered more responsive to market dynamics and sustainable than SC?

Value chain maybe can be studied in every field. value chain in economy, agriculture, tourism industry or food and health. The important issue is that which filed you are going to apply value chain and what kind of variables you will catch up. The content you are in can guide your value chain approach as well.

I agree with Morteza. Application of Value chain has been studied in most popular fields.
I have applied value chain analysis to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of product life-cycle management (PLM) processes.
All aspects of Value Chain Management such as: X-ability, cost, leanness, responsiveness, agility, tools and technology, and organization issues have to be considered during PLM.

The difference between a value chain and a supply chain is that a supply chain process involving only those parties involved in fulfilling a customer request, while a value chain can involve a much broader set of interrelated activities used by the company to create competitive advantage.
The critical dimensions that should be include in a VC was defined by the pioneer in this area Michael Porter as "five steps or activities are inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service. Inbound logistics include receiving, warehousing and inventory control. Operations include value-creating activities that transform inputs into products. Outbound logistics include activities required to get a finished product to a customer. Marketing and sales are activities associated with getting a buyer to purchase a product. Service activities include those that maintain and enhance a product's value, such as customer support."
The VC is therefore more than just and improved version of an SC.
In value chain you mainly compare the added value with cost ratio.The main difference with supply chain is in value creation, in supply chain you discribe the process"flow", in value chain you describe the "value creation" (where (process/activity...) and how... )
