A thin sheet of aluminum is cooled to -5 degree Celsius and keep constant. It is submersed into a container of water at 1 degree Celsius. How should i go about in solving this problem? In the end hopefully could plot a graph of time and how much ice is formed%.
Suggestions:
Heat transfer> Conduction because fluid is not in movement.
Divide the fluid into layers of element and calculate the heat transfer in each layer.
and i'm kind of stuck here... not sure how to formulate it.
any help? is my approach correct?

you can model this phenomenon using the diffusion equation, preferrably with temperature- (and thus state-) dependent variables. I have done some work on this myself, but there are plenty of papers out there, often linked to food applications.
As I understand one of your boundary conditions (the temperature of the aliminium sheet) is constant at -5 C; that means you can use Dirichlet boundary conditions. The other boundary conditions are dictated by the container itself, I would assume perfect insulation; meaning Neumann boundary conditions.
