Defended my dissertation last week. The theory that has emerged clearly enhance the framework that was introduced in my literature review. One of my committee members wants me to go back and introduce that theory in literature review ( my chair does not think so but is publicly politically correct and siding with the other member). It does not make sense to me, because when I wrote the literature review that theory was not even in picture. I need help to get others view and hopefully source to show her how it is normally done.
The easiest thing is to just make the requested changes Mastaneh, even if you don't agree. The changes will be reviewed by the head of department I think, not the examiners, so it is not possible to argue with them
Fully agree with Andrew. Examiners appreciate rebuttal - but not when their is an attempt to play committee members against each other. The committee members are also unlikely to be swayed by RG opinions - or supplied examples from it.
Sadly, I agree that you should consider this “another opportunity for growth” and move on. The best outcome would be for you to publish your work the way you wanted to do it (if so, consider that sweet revenge).
What you can do is to comply with the request but clearly explain the relationship between your grounded theory and the theoretical framework in your literature review. I agree that the request is odd since it would be like telling a doctoral student to include and present his or her own findings in the review section of previous research, and then again, but more fully, in the result section.
That is exactly how I feel. To me the literature that is used in findings is more of a supporting document.
