Dear all, if I am using an established scale for data collection in my research. Do i need to take permission from the author? Is this mandatory to justify research criteria or it is just an ethical action that we need to comply with. This has created a lot of confusion, please cite material if you know any which declares details to this query.

using an established scale if published you need to cite it as a reference. If not published you need to get permission and to acknowledge the authors

I have cited them properly but i was concerned that it wont be copyright violation or wrong ethically if i don't take permission to use it.
Since it is published this publication allows us to use it since we are considering citing the author
