I am currently working on extracting phenolic acids from archaeological pottery samples, but have not been getting any successful results. So far, I have tried the following solvent systems:
- DCM: Methanol (1:1 and 1:2)
- 70% Methanol in water
- 20% Methanol in water
All extractions were performed using ultrasonication. I also varied the sonication time and temperature, but haven’t observed any improvement. Despite these efforts, I haven’t been able to detect phenolic acids in my extracts.
Has anyone worked on similar extractions from complex or degraded matrices? I would appreciate any suggestions on solvent systems, extraction conditions, or pre-treatment steps that might improve recovery.

Use acidified methanol (e.g., 2% H₂SO₄ in methanol) at elevated temperatures or microwave-assisted extraction to improve phenolic acid recovery from archaeological pottery. Optimizing solvent acidity and extraction conditions helps release phenolics bound to the ceramic matrix.
