Marginal gas reserves located remote from gas transmission pipelines represent a serious challenge in gas resource management.
Transporting natural gas from onshore remote gas-producing wells using adsorbed natural gas (ANG) vessels (truck mounted), could be an alternative to compressed natural gas (CNG) technology or pipeline construction?
Ci sarebbero delle autobotti, progettate per lavorare sotto pressione (es. quella usata per il trasporto di LPG), che viaggerebbero sempre carichi di adsorbente e verrebbero riempiti di gas compresso e scaricati all'arrivo.
Considerata la densità del gas a pressioni di poche decine di bar, pur con l'aumento di capacità creato dalla presenza di adsorbenti, siamo sempre a una capacità di almeno un ordine di grandezza inferiore a quella con il GNL. Non mi pare molto conveniente.
Dear colleagues, thank you for your answers, which underline (in a general sense) the lower convenience of ANG compared to LNG or CNG technology. On this, of course, I agree with you. My question mainly concerns the "operational side" of a technology rather than another, in case we refer to marginal / remote onshore wells. In such cases, which are not an irrelevant part, it could be a problem to rely on:
- Construction of a new pipeline: for economic reasons the gas flow rate of the well(s) must justify the costs.
- LNG natural gas liquefaction plant: usually is not applied to onshore wells, it is mainly used for offshore applications where methane is liquefied and transported using LNG ships.
CNG system: surely it can be used but it is not free. I mean that natural gas should be pressurized from well head pressure to 220 bar with a suitable compressor with a consequent energy request, in addition to the danger of transporting cylinders full of methane at 220 bar. You should have an electric generator suitable for the compressor's kW on site, and this is not always true.
In this scenario my question/reflection concerned the use of the ANG system which, although having lower storage “quantitative” capacities, could (perhaps) be applicable to remote / marginal wells because:
- Less delta pressure required by the application (usually 30-50 bar)
- Use of small compressor with reduced power request
- Transportable system applicable to onshore wells.
- Cylinders with cheaper construction features. In addition, low-pressure ANG tanks open new possibilities for tank designs of various forms and configurations instead of the cylindrical form of CNG high-pressure tanks.
- (Probably) the cylinders/tanks will also require less periodic checks.
