What do you think are the main barriers to translating your research findings into clinical practice?
And if there was a place to share your research that increased use of the findings by clinicians, would you take the time out of your day to use that platform?

There is no regulation in an area which needs regulation. In clinical practice, there are groups: Group 1. Those that recommend the drug to their patients "too early" and their patients pay the price in adding new adverse outcomes to a new drug that was tested in too few patients before it was approved for sale. Group 2. Those that recommend the drug "too late", letting all additional adverse outcomes to be found in the patients of other doctors. The mid-ground is difficult to find.
Thank you Dennis. And why do you think some doctors recommend drugs too early or some too late? Could a lack of time or limited access to evidence-based research be a contributing factor?
Hi Blake,
There isn't enough funding nor emphasis placed on the translation of therapeutics, particularly those that are non-pharmaceutical in nature, for different populations. Plus I think it is a lack of understanding from researchers (including myself) on what it takes to translate something into the community properly (so that it is adopted by healthcare systems if necessary). The research team for this is fundamentally different. It is a really important discussion topic that is raised by industry, community members and now researchers alike.
Thank you Travis. And as a researcher do you think you would be willing to spend additional time each week sharing your research findings online if it meant that your research was more likely to be used by clinicians and allied health professionals?
Of course. I think that is the goal. To develop a therapeutic strategy or clinical endpoint that will be translated into practice. Otherwise there is no point to our research and all our findings will be drowned in the sea of publications. However, I do feel that the government or industry should renumerate scientists for translation to add emphasis to its importance. If there is no goal for translation, then there should be no funding, particularly clinical research
