In triaxial tests,
we conduct the following tests.
Unconsolidated Undrained-------cu (undrained shear strength)
Consolidated Undrained-------c´ and ϕ´ (effective parameters), c and ϕ (Total stress parameters)
Consolidated Drained-------c´ and ϕ´ (effective parameters)
My question is,
The total stress parameters from CU test ( c and ϕ ) are they the same as the cu obtained from UU test and ϕu from the same test, or are they different?
First you have to understand under what conditions which test is feasible. Say for example UU test condition, it will be suitable for saturated clays (for short term analysis). Similarly let us say CD test condition, it is suitable for saturated sands (for both long term and short term analysis) and can be used for clays (for long term stability analysis). And CU test condition, it is suitable for investigation of safety against failure of earthen dams which may occur due to sudden drawdown of water table.
Now say for example we are doing UU and CD on same soil sample there should be some change in the values of effective and total stress parameters as test conditions change.
