What do you think about the best qualitative method to better explore and interpret the career paths in migrant women's experience? Which method would be more coherent and suitable to be used between semi-structured interviews or life histories? I have a quite clear opinion about, but it would be interesting to hear your own opinions and discuss this issue to clarify mine. The starting point is to analyse the personal/professional evolution and combine them both. Thank you in advance for your contributions.
I'm not sure I would draw a clear line between semi-structured interviews and life histories. In particular, you could base a semi-structured interview on questions that follow a timeline, and you would probably want to hear quite a bit of interpretive story telling in the context of a life history.
It seemed to be the best solution to me, too. But I was not sure it was possible to mix both methods such as you are planning, is it possible, then? With semi-structured interviews following a timeline, firstly, and after that going back again on some focused questions.
I'm planning the research problem by social psycology/feminist theory (of course!) and I would use the etnographical feminist methodology, therefore I need to apply an oral narratives-life hisory / story telling, yes. Nevertheless, my dilemma is provoked becuase of the "unpopular" reputation of this kind of technics within the non-feminist/antropologist community! Thank you very much, dear Professor Morgan.
I think that putting labels on methods can be more confusing than helpful. Still, calling something semi-structured interview gives you lots of options about how you set up the questions.
But a lot does depend on who your audiences and evaluators are. If you have to convince people who might be skeptical about your methods, you may need to be more careful about how you label your approach.

I have read a little bit about BNIM and it seems to be a specific set of steps for doing interviews. I personally take a broader view, so I would recommend a more general approach to qualitative interviewing, such as Rubin & Rubin's book, Qualitative Interviewing: The Art of Hearing Data.
