One technical risk is contamination. Different people should handle separate lures to avoid contamination.

I thinks its a good research. It involves both the social and ecological aspect.

If the farmers understand the ecological and economical aspect of using the pheromone, farmers willingness will not be known.

Pheromone lures are (mostly) highly effective, but you'll have to choose the right kind of trap and lure for the pest insect you're going to work with. For instance, aggregation pheromone combined with a food attractant are cheap and extremely efficient against curculionidae beetles.

There are quite a few variables to consider and a lot of hard work to do, but in the long run the work will bring considerable improvements to the farmers.

I recommend you first target one (or a couple) pest to work with, understand its biology (bahaviour, biology, mating habits etc) and start studying the semiochemicals involved in the communication within the species. Then you can choose the best management option.

Pheromone lure is effective in pest management. It can use for monitoring and controlling insect pests, and a little number of traps per unit area is used for monitoring and mass trapping should be applied for controlling insect pest.

This strategy is cost effective compared with chemical insecticides.

The farmers in Myanmar are very interested in pheromone traps when we test in their fields and they want to adopt it if they can get readily available.

Yes its good initiative to start with pheromone. as pheromone trap is mainly use for monitoring purpose but in present days it is also used for mass trapping of adult in most crops. for experimental point of view you will require large area to conduct it. It is cost effective, eco friendly, and above all farmers can identify the adult pest in their field. if they are new to this techniques.

Using pheromone could be really novel and ecofriendly, and cost effective as well. But the efficacy would really depend on which pest you are trying. Incorporating pheromone based management with Integrated pest management tactics would be the best idea. I would suggest understanding of the population ecology (of the target pest) of that particular region before starting pheromone based/ or any semio-chemical based management.

Yes, lures are effective but you must identify the most effective for the specific pest you are targeting.

You also need to know the best time/ duration when the flying of the moths starts within a season for you to capture them before depositing their eggs on the host plants. It is cost effective because one lure can remain effective for two months if handled well and placed in a better level to reduce the amount of dust covering it. Having for two months it means the control will be very effective during the vegetative stage of a plant and good growth of the plant will be realized.

It is less involving once it is set and most farmers have no problem with it.

Once you set it you only need to do collection once or twice a week to clean the trap.

The use of pheromone to lure and for trapping insect pest is quite effective. This was found to be effective in trapping white tuber moth in potatoes. However, if tubers are exposed from the soil, they will be already infected and purpose of catching the moths would be failed.
