Let me start by saying that your question is a timely and important question. The considerations that follow your question are highly pertinent nowadays for we live in a culture of war and injustice rather than in a world of peace and justice.

As you certainly recognize, it is not possible to say how many people today reflect or do not reflect on the lives they are living. Because of the present and sad state of affairs (e.g., corruption, war, poverty, injustice), it is likely that many people do not reflect on the lives they are living and live, as you say, an "unexamined life". As a normal people, I try to live an "examined life", that is, to live in peace and harmony with myself, the others and the univesrse and, as a researcher, to look for the unknown in the domains of the true, the good, and the beautiful. I follow you when you say that "we should practice what we preach and teach". Our followers and students should see us moral examplars and highly committed to making the world a better place to live in. As professors we should aim at generating creative and innovative students, not coformist people, that is, students who try to understand, reinvent, and reconstruct what they learn, not students who uncritically accept ready made truths or truths imposed on them from outside. As I see it, the proliferation of Churches in the world today has much to do with people that look at them as a possible answer to their and others' problems. Needless to say, some of these Churches pursue more egocentric rather than altruistic concerns. As I see it, only (good) education can save societies and even individuals from possible collapse, be it violent or gradual.

I quite agree with you that we live in a chaotic society where corruption, war, poverty, injustice, cultism, prostitution, kidnapping, child abuse, drug abuse, nuclear arms proliferation, gay marriages and other ills take over the order of the day.

Internal peace and tranquility of the mind will give rise to love of one's neighbour and the larger society.

We truly can know the unknowable in the objective domains of truth and pure objectivity.

Yes, in my professing of my vast array of knowledge, I have tried to breed forth transformative and not conformist graduates who will come into the outside world hollow and problematic. We should take note that half knowledge is dangerous. Garbaging - in - and garbaging out what has been taught without applying critical and creative thinking skills is one of the things that had made society chaotic today. The goal of church going and membership is rightly based on egocentric ideals rather than altruism and the love of God and one's neighbour.

I agree with you that good and qualitative education is what will save societies and individuals from possible collapse.

Can you imagine where the so - called prophets will tell politicians and business people to bring day old babies and pound them in mortar for them to enable them win elections and be successful in their businesses? This is not mere saying. It happened in Nigeria by Eddy Nawgu in Anambra state at the beginning of the millenium year. Today now I read in the net about two pastors of the Cherubim and Seraphim church that murdered their woman friend and buried her in their church.

You can agree with me that someone who has good critical thinking skills will know that if she has a good manifesto, with the wherewithal to carry on with her campaigns to rule, together with a good aura and charisma, that she will win elections. So also is the business person with a good business acumen and has learnt how to break even.

People have to be taught all these things by people like us, so that they don't make mistakes that their friends, predecessors or relations have made, that is making the world a miserable and chaotic place to live in.
