That’s an excellent point. Importantly, this part of computation can be fully modeled and simulated using digital computers. It was a good start early in the nineties, see Bell, 1992 and  other attempts.

To my understanding, what needs still to be done (but is probably one of the most difficult tasks!) is to implement a scheme of coupled bistable oscillators of different types regarding for different types of ion channels on the membrane, and then think of an appropriate coupling scheme. At least two types of bistable oscillators are needed: one type that can produce an inward current, and one that can produce an outward current.  At the resting state, i.e., in the absence of external stimuli, individual oscillators may behave stochastically, i.e., fluctuating between the two basins without preferring any of them. When en external stimulation is detected, e.g. an AP arrives, oscillators should adapt their behavior so that they are able to perform optimally two tasks: a) propagate the AP, b) restore after it, so that the whole system returns to resting state.

This is something very challenging to think of, it basically an attempt to model an AP from below, i.e. as a consequence of the collective spatiotemporal dynamics of bistable oscillators where the coupling topology optimizes propagation of AP and restoration after it. 

These are just some thoughts. I am wondering if there is anyone else sharing them, and most importantly, working on them somehow..

Theoretical models are important but insufficient. Simultaneous investigations of phenomena in synapses, dendrites and axons should be developed using tetrode probes or silicon neuronal probes. Does anyone continue such work? Dear Dorian, does your team have yet further accomplishment, developing the work that underlies the formulation of NED-theory?

 The described model of computation for the neuron based on the flow of ions can be physically replicated, we are in the early stages of initiating this project.
