I am seeking the community's help on this: Do you have any experience with validated, non-proprietary scores which facilitate physician and nursing staffing ratios. Is SOFA score an appropriate tool for this? What is your opinion about other scores such as the TISS scores, CMI scores, etc.? Any substantiated input will be appreciated.

NAS encompasses better the nursing workload than TISS -28 in the ICU.
From my point of view, nursing workload it´s a dinamic concept that should be contextualized beyond the classical instruments.
An interest instrument is the Individual Workload Perception Scale Revised (IWPS - R) by Cox. It has the advantage of contextualizing the clinical workload in terms of peer, manager and unit support and it can be used also in wards.
You can have the same NAS or TISS score for a patient but the workload perception will be pretty different, for example, if you don´t have supplies, your nurse manager don´t give you enough support or your peers aren´t collaborative. Moreover, the perception of workload could be very different depending of the nurse´s experience, education, etc.
