A non-host plant need not be a resistant plant but a simple host for the pathogen to survive for some time. Unless the pathogen evokes a resistance reaction we cannot be sure of the infection and the resistance by the non-host. So only a non-host plant which shows a resistance reaction can be used for breeding purposes otherwise it has no meaning . We know of cases where resistance to a pathogen e.g. Phytophthora is available in the tertiary gene pool which cannot be used in a crossing program. In such cases mobilization of the gene from the resistance source using transgenic technology need to be attempted. This is true of many of the viruses which survive on the host causing little damage till they are onto the ideal host where they can survive and multiply easily.
how can we make sure that the particular wild species, showing resistant reaction when inoculation studies conducted with the pathogen is a non host or not
