Recently I was asked why we are required to Italicize nomials? It was pointed out that the International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants apparently does not explicitly state anywhere that taxon names must be Italicized. An admittedly quick look of the ICN seems to confirm this but I have yet to check this out properly. Irrespective, even if the ICN doesn't require this be done I assume this is a convention that dates back to Linnaeus if not further and that like so many things we do the requirement is sufficiently well enshrined in our science that we just do it anyway i.e. it is so obvious we don't need a rule that requires it.
I also note some people suggest that not only should genera and the lower ranks tbe Italicized but also Families, Orders etc.
So I am asking whether there is indeed a requirement in the ICN to Italicize taxon names / nomials, and if not should there be one? Also if there isn't one why do we do this?
It's an interesting question I feel but it is one that I am asking on behalf of my students.
