What is the best way to see our changing planet? thousands of satellites, airplanes, helicopters, and drones collect images of our planet every day. there are more than 1,150 active satellites in space, orbiting at different altitudes, phases, and speeds, but no one provide us with 4D visualization.
Starting to get at least a DEM to have a first 3D visualization as a way to start, you have several satellite with sensors that provide across track stereoscopic images, SPOT panchromatic stereoscopic pairs are useful if you plan to get a DEM with, for example, 2.5 meters of resolution. Also IKONOS provide stereoscopic pairs and other similar satellites with similar resolution. If you want to have only a DEM, you can use SAR interferometry using SLC (Single-Look Complex) images (interferometric pairs) acquired by TERRASAR or COSMO SkyMed, and if you request historic imagery you can see ESA´s archives for ENVISAT and ERS-1 and ERS-2 (INSAR tandem missions). If you need very high resolution DEMs (30 cm. resolutin) you should use airborne LIDAR or photogrammetric products. Then you can superimpose on your DEM a georreferenced image and have a 3D landscape vision. In any case you will have a lot of work if you want to process data by yourself; there are free and commercial software that allow you to do this kind of work.
