Bees create honey, and on that anology, scientists must create work. further honey bees do not do anything except producing honey :-)
So why are scientist called upon to stand to all requirements re: generic skills - be it people skills, communicative and intercultural knowledge, conflict management which Martina so fondly counts. I hope Austria is doing finely.

Scholars, including scientists, ought to play a major role in formulating the educational policy at both the school level & the university level. In developing countries, their independence (from outer interventions) allows them to proceed with a search for the best measures to be implemented for the sake of advancing the educational process. In other countries, there is chaos: there is no coherent educational planning, the proper person is not appointed in the suitable place, there is a wide gap between academic education & industrial practice, the university students' increase in number while the available jobs decrease in number, and there is no match between what the students learn & what the market requires.
This chaos is part of the “constructive chaos” which has been planned for certain countries in order to prevent them from progressing one inch. We can only hope that an overall change occurs in order to set things in the right order.
There is the same gap you identify between science and industry with regard to just about every tertiary educated qualification and the offerings of the workplace in Australia. Science is notable, the wages being so poor, institutions being defunded at the very time that there is a cry for ecenomic renewal based on something other than the price of exported iron to China. Only about 20% of our population is tertiary educated (university) so there is a lack of understanding of the value of education in senior management and leadership roles, boards etc where employment strategies and company business is defined. Much of the leadership in our organisations is male, and older generation - a key solution to this problem is accelerating women into leadership roles, and enabling succession that brings younger and better qualified people to take up leadership. Additoinally, though, there needs to be a much greater use of learning cultures in organisations. Unless organisations accept that they need to continually be revising, innovating, imagining, researching and evaluating their own activities, to work into disciplines and cultures that they are unfamiliar with, and be prepared to change as a result of what is learned, the problems you identify - be they scientics, philosophers, artists or health specialists that are unemployed - will continue. If executives have any tertiary qualifitcations at all, they are often 20-30 years old. Practical learning, networking and leveraging undiscussd systems of influence are the means people value, and while a reality they remain obstacles to sustainable business until learning and formal education are equally valued.
