Mohamed EL-Shimy , Sir with due respect, In future , microgrids will dominate in energy sector due to various reasons; No transmission and distribution losses, users will be more independent, RERs can be integrated easily, Capital cost is low, no political pressure, relocation issues etc.

It is not easy to find the actual number of microgrids across the globe. Lastly, super-grids will be good option but will not make a place like microgrids; political issues among developing nations, conflict of interests, war and terror issues, blackouts with worse impacts, energy reliability on totally other countries' resources etc.

Consider the proliferation, once a technology was widely available as Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS), of battery operated devices from the days of Carbon-Zinc, to Alkaline, to Lithium. That proliferation continues, at the same accelerating rate with microgrids. Most commercial and military applications already use this; Weather stations rapidly deployed to mountain tops have solar/battery power systems, as do roadside flashing/illuminated road signs. Today, the average consumer comes home and puts his watch, phone and laptop on the charger. The next stage in this development is to have microgrids on or in the immediate vicinity of devices; solar panel built-in, inertial moving weights as a charging system, tensile motion on fibers in clothing, etc. These exist in labs, they need more work to become COTS.
