Expiry date on medicine is a legal requirement wherein the manufacturer guaranties its potency. Obviously the drug does not become ineffective on the expiry date.
Good question. Actually nothing happens to most of the drugs on the date of expiry. It does not convert to something like poison on any particular day. Date of expiry only means that drug may start loosing it's potency after that. It can happen otherwise also on exposure to high temperature or humidity and many such factors.
The manufacturer of drugs gives the expiry date till which he guarantees the potency of the drug. He does not say that the drug is not to be used after the date of expiry. It is up to the consumer if he wishes to use it or not. This is the legal position.
Many office samples say: "discard after this date" or "do not dispense. Yet, a lot of these drugs are sent abroad after collection as "expired." Are there any legal obligations relative to "waste" of product as opposed to "expiration." Pills dumped down the toilet are a serious issue across the Western world.
