Yes, there is a need for change in the duration of classroom lectures in higher learning environment today due to the short attention span of the students. I suggest ten minutes lecture timeframe to explain the agenda for the class session imbedded in a Blended learning or Flipped method of teaching approach. You may introduce an improv after explaining the agenda for the class session. In addition, I suggest integrating cooperative learning & collaborative learning (group team-based learning) approaches, methodologies, & techniques which are very effective teaching/learning styles, as well.

As far as I know, research consistently shows that the average attention span for processing complex information is around 10–20 minutes, after which engagement drops significantly. This challenge is compounded by modern distractions and the widespread availability of alternative learning tools.

Today’s students (digital natives), are accustomed to quick access to information and interactive media, therefore this has shaped their expectations for learning environments, leading them to favor shorter, more dynamic sessions over passive listening.

In my opinion, while reducing lecture duration might not be feasible for all subjects, restructuring lectures into shorter, focused segments interspersed with interactive activities could be a practical approach. The classroom should become a space for active learning, where students apply knowledge, engage in critical thinking, and collaborate with peers. This shift requires a reimagining of not just lecture duration but also the overall approach to teaching and learning.

As educators, we could adopt a flipped classroom model, where students use AI-driven tools to learn foundational content independently. Classroom time can then focus on application, problem-solving, and collaboration, areas that are harder to replicate in a self-paced environment.

Finally, I am convinced that Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) can evolve to meet new demands by engaging students in real-world, multidisciplinary project, since this approach not only enhances engagement but also helps students develop critical skills for the 21st century.

It is not simply a matter of reducing class time but finding innovative ways to engage students and create meaningful learning experiences. By combining shorter, focused lectures with active and collaborative learning strategies, educators can better meet the evolving expectations of today’s learners and prepare them for the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
