the thermal conductivity k a material can be described by k = Lce,pve,p/3 with L as mean free path, ce,p specific heat of electrons or lattice and ve,p is the Fermivelocity of the electrons or the velocity of sound. The contributions of electrons and lattice must be added. The mean free path is determined by the scattering mechanisms. In the lattice, at high temperature T, the Umklappsattering dominates and at low T point defect scattering. In metals we have electron phonon scattering. These scattering processes must be studied in detail. The contribution of electrons dominates in metals like Cu or Ag. There, the Wiedemann-Franz law can be applied to calculate the thermal conductivity. In "bad" conductors like Bi both contributions must be taken into account.
