I am writing a proposal on the topic: The Church of Nigeria: A Nationalistic Force in the Global South
This study explores the Church of Nigeria's (Anglican Communion) nationalistic and decolonization efforts, analyzing its estrangement from the Church of England and leadership in the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON). Situated within perceptions of British neo-colonialism, this research examines the Church of England's perceived collaboration with the Northern Muslim oligarchy, undermining Nigeria's democratic aspirations and Christian majority. Through a critical analysis of primary sources, including church documents, archival materials, and oral histories, this work will through a postcolonial lens, investigate Historical Antecedents: The Church of England's perceived "conspiracy of silence" regarding Nigerian Christian plight, the Church of Nigeria's rejection of Canterbury's leadership and forging of GAFCON alliances, the impact on global Christianity, particularly in the Global South, where nationalistic and decolonization movements reshape ecclesiastical landscapes. This research contributes to debates on Christianity's role in shaping democratic societies, highlighting tensions between religious identity, national sovereignty, and democratic values.
