Which textbook do you recommend for an introductory biophysics course (aimed at 2nd year students from different disciplines: https://apps.ualberta.ca/catalogue/archive/course/bioph/201/1810)?
Here are a few textbook recommendations for an introductory biophysics course:
"Physical Biology of the Cell" by Rob Phillips, Jane Kondev, and Julie Theriot. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the physical principles that underlie the behavior of biological systems. It covers a range of topics, including biomolecules, cellular mechanics, and genetic networks, and is written in an accessible and engaging style.
"Biophysics: An Introduction" by Rodney Cotterill. This textbook provides a clear and concise introduction to the fundamental principles of biophysics, including thermodynamics, kinetics, and spectroscopy. It also covers key biological processes, such as protein folding, enzyme catalysis, and membrane transport.
"Biological Physics" by Philip Nelson. This textbook provides an introduction to biophysics that is accessible to students with a background in physics or biology. It covers a range of topics, including biomolecules, cellular mechanics, and sensory systems, and emphasizes the use of mathematical models to understand biological phenomena.
"Molecular Biophysics: Structures in Motion" by Michal Kurzynski. This textbook provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure and function of biological macromolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates. It covers key topics such as protein folding, enzyme catalysis, and ligand binding, and emphasizes the use of computational methods to understand biomolecular structure and function.
These textbooks are all well-regarded and widely used in introductory biophysics courses. Depending on the specific focus of your course, one or more of these textbooks may be a good fit for your needs.
Thank you for the suggestions! Right now we are using “Biological Physics” by Nelson for BIOPH 201 - Introduction to Biophysics (https://apps.ualberta.ca/catalogue/course/bioph/201) and “Physical Biology of the Cell” by Phillips et al. for BIOPH 401/501 - Advanced Biophysics (https://apps.ualberta.ca/catalogue/course/bioph/401). I am curious as to which textbooks other instructors are using for their biophysics courses.
