This taxidermied specimen comes from Argentina, Paranà river and was given to the Museum G. Zannato (Italy) in 1923. Probably it is a Caiman latirostris.

It shows red and black painted spots and lines in its ventral region skin.

Me and my Tutor (Dr. Viviana Frisone, www.museozannato.it) have an hypothesis about the origin of this painted signs: they could be drawn by some indigenous tribes who live around the river Paranà, Argentina.

Do you have information about painted caymans from South America?

Do you have some suggestion about bibliography on that subject?

Do you know who could be the author of these signs and their meaning?
