I think you can forward your career as a member of a research based company, mainly indicating sales representative. You can apply in Australia for this kind of job.

I have a friend who is a marine biologist like me specializing in sediment cleanup. While he always seemed to find a job, like you, he always seemed to be unsatisied. He decided to go back to school and abtained an MBA. He now manages the Seattle office of an international consulting firm. His office is still involved in sediment cleanup. He is able to manage the office as an MBA and is still involved in the science. Something like this may be a path for you if you have an interest in the business end of things. To some extent it will depend on your age and how much time you can afford for the transition. I was laid off from a museum research position at 39 and went to law school--now retired after 25 years of law practice and doing systematic zoology again as a volunteer research associate. Facility with the language and the ability to think logically are skills that will be transferable in a number of directions.

With your experience, why not look around for a position in a bigger lab, where you could have a lab manager position? You would be able to supervise/mentor trainees coming into the lab, plus oversee the lab in terms of ordering, making inventories, organizing etc. In some labs, you'd also get a chance to help write grants/papers, if that's something you enjoy. Good lab managers are a rare commodity and are well paid and precious to labs that are lucky enough to have them.

Have you ever thought about going back to school to get your PhD? I was in your position several years ago. I was also a research tech trained in molecular biology for over a decade where I gained technical and and also lab management skills.

If your passion is leading your own independent and/or collaborative research projects, then I would suggest pursuing a PhD.

Several years ago, I decided to advance my career by enrolling in a PhD program where my previous experience has helped me to be successful (and brought happiness) in more ways than I can imagine. Your skillset and maturity will be well sought after by many PIs and set you apart from many traditional graduate students.

If that is not an option, then echoing the comments from Svasti Haricharan above, I strongly agree that, perhaps, looking for a bigger lab where you can take on more lab leadership roles might be your cup of tea.
