There are bright examples of genetic modification of plants that were successfully applied in practice. For example, the golden rice that was obtained in 2000 and represents a rice plant with the enhanced ability to produce vitamin A., Of course, there are a lot of other GM plants that include ones resistant to pests, unfavourable environmental factors as well as ones with improved nutritional values etc. However, I wonder if there are examples of plant varieties obtained using genomic selection? I mean those that are already grown by agricultural companies.
Hi, Rim. In year 2016, my company, Sime Darby Plantation started deploying genomic selection in producing high-yielding oil palms for commercial planting. The first planting was 100 hectare and followed by 1,000 ha per year. We started collecting the yield data (oil palm only start fruiting ~2 years after field planting) and the validation is promising so far. Hope this is useful, Rim.
