Today, the Open Access movement is well-established in scholarly publishing. It is important to note that many OA journals are new and have not yet received their first impact factor (IF). So, if you have to choose, do you prefer to publish in a Subscription-based journal with IF, or in OA journal without IF? And why? Are visibility, costs, prestige of publisher and speed of publication as important as impact factor?
First of all, we need to keep in mind that OA journals and predatory journals are two different phenomena - it is unfortunate that many people assume that all OA journals are predatory.
In every discipline, there is a formal or informal 'ranking' of journals - and the mode of publishing (open vs. subscription based) is totally irrelevant in terms of their reputation and prestige. So is the reputation of the publisher. I am always puzzled when people associate the prestige of a particular journal with that of its publisher. Having sad that, I, as well as all my co-authors, are simply aware of the !perceived! ranking of the journals in our chosen domain and we prefer targeting the one with the best reputation out of the entire pool of suitable outlets. However, the speed and the quality of the review process have become increasingly important in the last several years. Hope it helps!
I have never published in a subscription based journal. But in case of visibility of paper I think that is already subscribed by many university so they will read the article. The time they take it may be a longer. But open access journals also take time. My one paper took one year to be punished. But they OAs charge very high. In case the journal with subscribe are free I think. If anyone knows any this type of journal regarding development and organic farming please let me know.
