I believe a statistician is far more a flexible job rather than a biostatistician. Both have their own market place and specific requirements that might sound to cover each other very closely. But dependent on where you live and the market status and needs of your country one might be better for.

If you are thinking to work remote , a statistician has a higher chance to find a job. biostatistician will focus on genomic data mostly while the former can target any market .

This was my personal idea.

Biostatisticians understand numbers from biology and try to understand their behaviours, relationships, and differences multi-dimensionally and try to draw inferences from them scientifically.

As Behnaz said, it depends on the market/area of specialty. A statistician with no specialization has a broad spectrum of work, without going further than (maybe) classic/frequentist statistics. A biostatistician, on the other hand, is a word used to describe those who make use of statistics (and specialized techniques) to study, analyze, and report results in a specific domain (i.e. Biology).

All in all, at the end of the day, the word one would use to describe one's work would depend on one's specialization/field of work because both are statisticians and/or with statistical training and skills.

In my opinion, Statistician can work in any sector (banking, finance etc) whereas a Biostatistician work mainly with pharma companies, Research field and in independent contract research organizations.

Generally speaking, statistics is a mathematical science that focuses on empirically gathering, handling, and evaluating quantitative data. Although some of the work done on the subject of statistics is theoretical, the majority of it is applied to the task of solving real-world problems in a range of fields.

But the area of statistics that focuses on issues related to public health, healthcare, medical care, and environmental health, is called biostatistics. Biostatistics work advances medicine by measuring factors like treatment effectiveness and risk-reward connections.

Imo, the dividing line for a statistician is between technical and biological data, i.e. the kind of data matters, with respect to professional expertise. The reason that I see is that also applied maths like statistics is psychologically based on human intuitive decisions, when it comes to practical precision, methodical exactness and data interpretation, in terms of working speed and quality.

The statistician job ends when the numbers yield a probabilistic type relationship. The biostatistician must go one step farther - establish a causal relationship.
