The philippines is evidently an agricultural country and is considered as a major player of the country's economy, however most of the agricultural industries here in the country have not been sustained. Some of the agricultural lands have been converted to residential due to the demand caused by increasing population, some have been converted to industrial land hoping that the country could compete with advanced industrial countries worldwide, some have become idle lands and are of no use at all due to mining, etc.
There has been low subsidies from the government in terms of agricultural inputs such as irrigation, fertilizers, and other capital needed. there have been budget allocations but corruption has never left these types of scenarios.
Unlike other countries, farmers in the Philippines are price takers. They can't dictate the price and just depend on what wholesalers and retailers are setting even if the costs of the farmers have not been covered.
In order for them to survive, the major trend in here are joining cooperatives which somehow helps them in their farming activities and in their daily living.
Recently, most of the agricultural lands for the Philippines have been destroyed by typhoons. In the latter months of 2009, agricultural lands were hit by typhoons "Ondoy and Pepeng." For the information of everybody, Philippines is within the typhoon belt in the Pacific. every typhoon that comes in the country, agriculture is firstly affected. The effects of the typhoon in the economy due to the destruction of some agricultural plantations, will be felt by the people by 2010 onwards.
These are the major problems of agriculture in the Philippines. On the other hand, Philippines remains as a major exporter for some agricultural crops and by-products such as banana, coconut, tuna, mango, etc.
