Generally your standards should be prepared in exactly the same way that your unknown samples will be prepared. If you use Boric acid or cellulose as a binder for the unknowns, you should do the same for your standards. What are the requirements for your samples ? There is quite a range of existing standard materials available for plants and soils. If you share your needs, someone may be able to help identify the appropriate standard materials.

Tom's answer is the way to go. Ideally you need a set of samples for calibration and another set for validation.
