In recent years,inrush current caused by non-load closing of converter transformer has led to DC protection malfunction,harming safety and stability of power system.Particularity of converter transformer inrush current should be studied.In order to analyze difference of inrush currents between converter transformers and normal power transformers,the paper analyzes features of inrush current caused by converter transformer from aspects of parameters,excitation characteristics,winding structure,operation mode,on-load tap changer and switching sequence of converter transformers in UHVDC.Results show that the inrush current caused by converter transformers is larger and decays slower,compared to normal power transformers.Besides,on-load tap changer and switching sequence of converter transformers also have influence on the inrush current.Some suggestions are proposed to reduce inrush current.

I don't have the paper, but if you want to limit inrush current in a very high power transformer, use a crossed field reactor in series with it, where the control current ramps up over several cycles so putting the converter transformer under load more gradually.
