Education is on standstill, The youths are protesting for their rights to live (#EndSARS, #EndPoliceBrutality, #EndTheKillings, #......), Universities are closed because of poor funding by the government, many things are awfully wrong in the country. So, how long will it take for the United Nation or European Union (if possible) to intervene in the activities of any nation that is under siege?
What kind of intervention do you expect?
Nothing contained in the UN Charter authorize the United Nations to intervene in matters which are essentially within the domestic jurisdiction of any state. If Nigeria wants to close its Universities I do think that is within its jurisdiction.
The UN Charter only authorities intervention where a matter is regarded as endangering international peace and security. The closure of universities in Nigeria and ongoing civil demonstrations are from an international law view point view, minor domestic issues with no standing. Not even the Boko Haram insurgency could trigger UN or EU intervention.
Hello, I am a graduate student of an American university. My area of interest is International Studies and during this Fall Semester, I am learning about the problems in your country. It appears that the African nations have received billions of dollars for buildng schools, roads, providing healthcare, and paying proper salaries to professionls. However, it also appears that the reason your countries continue to suffer is because of CORRUPTION by your elected officials who control the financial aid that has been given since 1948. This is also a problem in all the Latin American countries. I think that YOUR generation must rise up, as the French did during their revolutions, as other Europeans did, and as we did. YOU MUST DEMAND HONEST PEOPLE THAT WILL RE-ORGANIZE YOUR ADMINISTRATION DEPARTMENTS.
I think that the problem is more complex. Democracy legitimacy is not developing effectively in XXI century governments. My research is related to the doctrine of cosmopolitan law which emphasizes the need for broad reforms in the U.N system so the citizens of the world can participate in international decisions, not only domestic ones. In my opinion, without establishing a multilayer power structure and building up a broad U.N. intervention political and juridical power in the state powers, the African countries' inequalities are not gonna a be faced. Actually, the sovereignty paradigm must be revised not only in consideration of humanitarian contexts but also in granting democracy legitimacy.
