Does anyone know any software (or GIS tool) for geological modelling that use surface geological - topographic data and can extrapolate 3d geological models?
We are trying to model an area and the only available data are geological maps and LIDAR data.
(PS: free would be a bonus)

QGIS is free software which you can perform many geological stuff .

ArcGIS can do 3D modeling. You can perform cross sections. It can interface with CAD data and do contour plots. It is not free. I have not used QGIS enough to comment.
I am not sure, but you can try with Move. It is not free but I guess your department already has a license.
yep someone here do have a licence, it is for a mate of mine though, he works for a private company, thanks anyway Simo! :-)

The best geological mapping software is ArcGIS for desktop, QGIS and if you need 3D geological modeling (not surface data only) MidlandValley Move. If you Want write me your email and I can sand you this programs.
