I am wondering whether there is a symbolic software for solving systems of equations with symbolic matrices. I am used to working with MATHEMATICA but, as far as I know, functions Solve and LinearSolve are not conceived for such equations. I would be very pleased if somebody could recommend me an alternative.

I have used SymPy, a symbolic Python package for python that is relativity fast and fairly robust. Sympy is included with the a python stack from Anaconda so it is relatively easy to get started with, assuming you want to use Python.

I have checked Sympy and, indeed, you can define symbolic expressions with non-commutative properties. However, I have tried some simple expressions such as the inverse of a product of matrices and the results are not what expected. I guess there must be a way to work it out by expecifying more symbolic relations. By the way, I have found an interesting package in mathematica that deals with algebra with symbolic matrices, as well as different calculations related to differential geometry. For me the Sympy syntax is a little weird. I am not master in it but I am using it more and more for almost everything. I have had very good luck posting my Sympy questions on Stack Overflow, most of the time the authors of the Sympy package have answered my questions.
