I don't think there is something like a general "single view image based 3D reconstruction" method. What people achieved is the detection and 3D reconstruction of known 3D objects on which the algorithm as been trained.

Though it would just be an estimate, some work can be referred in the area of hand gesture recognition where 3D modeling of hand is attempted with a single reference (2.5D) frame. Despite that Its not general, might give some clue:
