Should we teach professionalism as a course on its own?
The trouble we still see in medical and health-related professions is teaching professionalism as a separate course on its own, not integrated with clinical subjects or clinical situations. What are views about teaching professionalism, should it be teaching on its own without any integration with clinical practice and patient-doctor relationship practice sessions.

In my opinion, it is like the Ethics, it is not taught with a course, it must be planned as a transversal axis of all the subjects and the methods, procedures and particular means that this training demands must be used.
I do teach a class in professionalism for very beginning social work students. It is tied into ethics and leans heavily on our code of ethics and the behavioral standards that are expected of social workers. It is sequenced before they begin clinical practice classes. Students, despite the fact they are brand new to the profession feel this is not always important content. I would disagree with them.
Should we teach professionalism as a course on its own?
No! We shouldn't! Professionalism courses should be integrated within their respective disciplines if we are to be relevant in teaching.I do teach journalism courses, it does not make sense to me to teach journalism professionalism without giving relevant examples from the field of journalism. It is like building castles in the air. Bearing in mind that each discipline or profession has its respective professionalism it gives a teacher a better position to teach students ably and to help them focus on the professions of their choice.
In Greece in compulsory education, mainly secondary there is a course about school professional orientation and it does entail issues of professionalism. It is a rather unique subject.
First of all it does not get grades
Secondly, it can be taught by teachers of any specialization.
Thirdly, since it does not get grades, learners might treat it as a session to relax. However, since it involves usually practical activities that engage learners and a lot of discussion they find it interesting and participate.
Whether it is efficient or not, it is a great discussion as with any subject.
Teaching of professionalism must be both explicit and implicit. The cognitive base consisting of definitions and attributes and medicine’s social contract with society must be taught and evaluated explicitly. Of even more importance, there must be an emphasis on experiential learning and reflection on personal experience. The general principles, which can be helpful to an institution or program of teaching professionalism, are presented, along with the comprehensive program on the teaching of professionalism.
I agree with Professor Faroun. Professionalism should be taught both explicitly and implicitly. I include it in the class I teach called, "Legal, Ethical and Bioethical Issues in Nursing". That is the explicit instruction. However, the students need to see professionalism applied. I model professionalism when I teach the students various procedures. For example, when I teach Post-Mortem Care, I model professionalism by demonstrating respect for the decedent. This is an example of implicit teaching.
One way to begin a dialogue on professionalism would be to pose an ethical or bioethical dilemma. Should minor children be permitted to get immunized, if they desire, without parental permission when the minor child's parents are Anti-vaccination?
I think it is a good idea to be taught separately with case studies from various related clinical subjects. This will enable the student to learn what is professional behavior and what is not. A discussion of ethics and legality should also be included in this course.
