I am doing herbivory experiments with T.ni caterpillars. I do have some susceptible and resistance plants variety. While arranging them in petriplate I think there should be some tricks. I mean patterns likewise suseptible should one side and resistance in other, or one by one?
As per your question there are only two independent variables i.e. susceptible and resistant while the dependent variable is only the feeding rate. Therefore only a simple t-test shall be good enough for the experiment to conclude if plant trait is related to feeding rate. However if you have more variables you may go with Randomized Block Design and Use Analysis of Variance accordingly. In order to arrive at better conclusions you need large number of replicates and very less error and that’s the thumb rule.
