Absolutely we academicians should lead society for the reasons you have all so precisely laid out. But what is the reality? I would venture to guess that things differ in your country from ours.
Universities should and must lead society. Along all the years most new ideas innovations and even leaders came from universities or are connected in some way with it. Some initiated and directed revolutions or fueled it.
Dear Drs. Ali and Aiman:
I consider myself privileged to be involved in this intriguing dialogue on higher education institutions' role and function and be among this galaxy of educators and scholars (such as yourselves) tackling this intellectual subject.
To be sure, universities are seats of knowledge and learning that cannot be separated from their regional and international societies and communities. In my view, they are meant to put into practice what is learned in the classroom and inspire the next generations into the transfer of knowledge and what we will do in the future to take higher education forward without doubt.
I think universities and academic institutions must take a lead in society. They have the vital responsibilities of imparting education which would help the society meet the moral challenge of our times.
From my point of view, the increase in cases of society violence that reflects in somehow in academic institutions and universities, and sometimes has shaken the conscience of the society, these unfortunate incidents underscore the urgency for our scholars and researchers in universities to pause and introspect at the erosion of values to ensure leading the society.
Universities build a modern society based on values of human dignity and equality. Universities have the opportunity to lead the society based on the freedom of human spirit, economic opportunities for all and social justice.
Universities have the innovative ways of teaching, research and community services. The task of leading the society will have to be in part shouldered by the academic institutions and universities.
