Most of us teach different topics in computer science, we studied those during our, bachelor, master and PhD, so we have at least general knowledge about most computer topics, why should we stick with only one particular topic?
Is it important to do so?
Ideas come to person as a flash, sometimes they are irrelevant to the topic of interest, shouldn't we pursue them?
Dear Ahmad, I suggest you to specialize in particular areas of research. Consider that many methods that you can develop for some scientific areas can be also used to give some contributes (with improvement with respect to the state of the art) in other fields of the same scientific research area. Such as example: object detection, object classification, object recognition, object tracking. In this computer vision and image processing areas many techniques for the baseline problem are similar. So what you learn about a specific area can be useful for future works for other topics.
Because in research, you need to make contribution to the knowledge. If your research does not add to the knowledge anything, then it's useless. Therefore, because you are not be able to add many things new, you need to focus on one topic, and add something new in this particular topic.
It is indeed more beneficial to focus on one research area as it gives an added on advantage to a researcher to explore things in a particular direction.
As pointed out by me in my Ppt. Presentation,titled,"Amusing Musings on Research by a Re-Searcher" , uploaded by me to R.G. ,Research implies " More and MORE on Less and less". That means one puts in a Greater Insight into a Particular Topic/Area, whereas during Studies one Learns a little about All Topics/Areas/Fields.
But if the Other Topics are Related to one's Topic of Research, one can include them and widen the Scope of his Research. This is as far as Research Work to be submitted to a University for the award of a Research Degree. That is because many a Universities,except for a Few Advanced Research Institutes, do not encourage or Permit Research in other Disciplines,even though the person is Really capable of,as in my case also. I can Supervise Research candidates only in Electrical Engineering.To some extent,it may be due to Fear of others Competing for the Opportunities of some vested interests, in their Discipline.
No one Prevents any one from working or Publishing his papers in any Field or Topic,even if it is not his area of Studies. As a matter of Fact some members of R.G,Particularly, as I see some Young Student Members are doing it and I am actually amazed at their Grip and Presentation of their work in other Ares.
As I Feel, One should be encouraged to Supervise or do Interdisciplinary Research and Research in other Disciplines, for Real Progress and Enrichment of Knowledge. After all, unless the work is of some Accepted Standard, it cannot be Passed Through.This is my Personal View or possibly the view of many more like me.
As of now, only independent Researchers, not aspiring for any Degree, can do it.

Who told that you have to stick only to one particular topic? Even if this is the usual model implemented in most academics area, it is not the only one. It really depends on the type of impact you want to have and on your own interest. You can indeed spend your career to develop for example image compression algorithms and become an undisputed expert (at best...). In general, this type of approach is focusing more on developing methodologies. On the other hand, if your interest moves from methodologies to applications, you will probably see very soon that you will need to learn and apply more methodologies in different areas of expertise to solve applied problems. Addressing a domain of applications with state of the art methodologies, contributing actually to the development of these methodologies, will transform you in an other type of expert. However, ideas coming to a person as a flash have in my opinion only low chance to succeed, because of a lack of depth in the area of application of this person. Time to understand is rarely replaced by genius flash.

Knowledge is not equivalent to degrees and specialization... Ahmad , you should realize that first. Yes, technology needs streamlining and if you choose a field then you need to understand it from the base level. Based on my observation, modern age solutions require people not so specialized that cannot think alternatively but ones who can bridge it with their understanding. This includes interdisciplinary researchers, who are capable enough to understand and provide answers that are feasible and realistic.
