Today’s younger generation is using mobile technologies on a regular basis and these technologies are being explored for classroom use to enhance student learning.
Do you think students of all levels should be given the same rights to use mobile phones in classrooms?
I think mobile technologies is a powerful tool in the current age of virtual learning. Its usage can have both positive and negative impacts and as long as it is controlled, then it wi b to the goo of all.
I would allow students to use mobiles for learning, if they are old enough to be responsible for using it to achieve educational goals. They must be responsible for taking care of their own mobiles. But at the same time, the mobile shouldn't be a distracting factor. Upper secondary students may be mature enough to obey some rules, like turning off the mobile device when the teacher gives the order. (But this may differ from culture to culture.)
College students would probably be a bit more responsible as far as using their mobile devices for educational purposes while in the classroom. But there will always be temptations to use your device for other purposes during class time. My high school tried to prevent students from using campus wifi for social media by blocking sites like Facebook and Twitter, but students were able to get around this easily by using a proxy to log on to their accounts.
Giving students the freedom to use their devices in class can be very enriching for the student if they use it for educational advantages, but it will really ultimately hurt them if they choose to misuse it.
I think high school courses could allow for students to use their devices in class depending on the subject of the course. STEM courses in particular could really benefit from having students use mobile apps. Students taking a chemistry course for example could use apps such as the interactive periodic table app while they are in the lab, or even apps that help them take pictures of microscopic images and diagrams.
All in all I think upper-level high school students could benefit greatly from using devices and should be given a chance to show they are responsible.
I have started using Socrative to engage large classes with questions during my two hour lectures and it has been fantastic. For example I post a multiple response question through the teacher interface and the students get in small groups and one logs into the student interface using their mobile phone or tablet to post their group response, which we can then discuss. I had 52 responses in a class of 90+ students last week. This level of engagement would not be possible without their access to smartphones. This technology would be great for older high school kids and might be part of a strategy encourage and teach responsible use of mobile phones for learning. I'm going to test this out when giving a lecture to 140 A level students on Thursday evening, where I will try this out with them!!
