social media accounts create a platform for the public to connect with their leaders personally whereby they can advise or critique their policies. Government officials can also make formal and informal announcements accessible to a wide range of the public in a short time. On the other hand social media accounts can be hacked, some people also may create accounts with similar profile leading to misrepresentations, confusions and misdirect ions which have even worse consequences. Accounts held by government officials therefore should be verified and their existence be within the knowledge of the public domain. In my opinion therefore i find nothing wrong with public figures having social media accounts
I think it is a good thing that government agencies have direct lines of communication with the public, but these media shouldn't be personal accounts. An official account on social media sites allows citizens to make inquiries, request information and communicate concerns and problems
Yes, I do think it's a great direct access. But how do we know if these accounts are authentic. How do we know its actually a politician running the social media and not PR groups?
From my experience, there are 2 different kinds of social media account owned by politicians:
They hire an agency to maintain the social media accounts. Usually, any posts by the owner (real politicians) have a sign that indicate they write it personally. It should be at the end of the posts. E.g. "-bo" for President Barack Obama.
They maintain their social media accounts personally.
There's no exact way to know which accounts that maintained personally, not an agency. But the easiest way to measure is knowing how they interact with their followers on social media.
