Should I use Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) or Oceanic Nino Index (ONI)?

Some publications use Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI) and some use Oceanic Nino Index (ONI). It isn't clear to me why one index is chosen over another. Are there times when one of the indices should be used over the other, or is it a matter of preference?
