Sometimes I see persons who are brilliant in their fields but are terrible at getting this information across to the students. Should it be then, that lecturers be taught how to teach or is it that some persons are just not cut out to teach?
Dear Mardene, I think it is not the matter and question of being taught, it is the matter of feeling teaching. All of us have got some lecturers who were very brilliant in their field of study but were unable to convey it properly to the students. I remember we said: he/she knows what to teach but doesn't know how to teach and transmit. I believe some have in-born quality, ability and talent to teach, i.e. they have a knack of teaching and are cut out to be a teacher/lecturers etc., to my mind.
Yes there are some brilliant minds who need help in getting the information effectively across to students. It is also true that some persons just have a knack for teaching and may not even need formal training but I think formal training can be provided for those who need it. I know universities like the University of the West Indies provides training that all academic staff must take. This might be a good idea because this can help a great deal I believe.
